I understand that women’s history is often untraceable since they often change their name when they marry. It is easier in Scotland, as it has long been tradition that a woman’s maiden name is used first on the memorial stone - for instance,

Ellen Smith wife of Peter Jones.

Did you know that while a married woman’s name includes her husbands first name (Mrs Peter Jones), if she is widowed she should be known by her own first name (Mrs Ellen Jones).
