Have you ever used Internet Archive? I found old books from the .1890s about Elk County. Even though they do not contain my ancestors names it provides a window into the time they lived. This area was vastly different then and it allows me to try to see things from their perspective,
All the time, Rainey! I've had a similar experience a number of times, and not to mention a few lucky instances where a book about the history of a town my ancestor lived in, especially smaller towns, even included a picture of them. Not to mention that most of those older histories are free to view, as you well know, just an excellent resource.
Love this! I tell people this all the time. Lots of people don't even think to "just Google" people rather than searching for them on just Ancestry or FS and end up missing all kinds of interesting stuff!
